Emergency Procedures:

This Emergency Procedures Guide outlines the steps to take in the case of an emergency

1. Building Evacuation

If you hear the “Alert tone”:

  • Secure your workplace – make sure all equipment is safe and turned off, and secure any confidential information or valuables.
  • Prepare yourself for a prompt evacuation according the emergency procedures and exit routes.

If you hear the “Evacuation tone” or are otherwise instructed to evacuate:

  • Evacuate quickly and calmly from the building by the nearest safe exit route.
  • Assemble at the designated muster point according to emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Wait for further instructions from the Building Wardens.

In the case of a fire, do not use lifts and do not stop to collect personal belongings.

2. Fire or Smoke

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

Assess:

  • Ensure that all necessary steps are taken to protect your safety and the safety of others
  • If necessary, evacuate the area

Alert:

  • Alert the people around you about the fire/smoke
  • Call Campus Security

Assist:

  • If it is safe to do so, assist any person in need.
  • If the fire brigade is called, assign someone to guide them to the exact scene of the incident.

3. Anti-Social Behaviour

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

If you can safely move away from an offender displaying anti-social behaviour, do so and alert Campus Security.

If an offender is directly threatening you:

  • Stay calm
  • Ask the offender to move away from the area and avoid sudden movements. Inform the offender of what you are doing i.e. I’m going to call security now.
  • Take a mental picture of the offender, including any threats made or weapons shown.
  • Make note of what the offender is doing and touching, and the direction they take once they leave.
  • Call Campus Security as soon as it is safe to do so.

4. Violent Offender

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

There may be a situation with a violent offender on campus, threatening the safety and security of yourself or other people.

1. Evacuate

  • If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to leave the premises as quickly as possible.
  • Leave your belongings behind and help others to escape, if possible.
  • Prevent anyone else from entering the area, and follow the instructions of any Emergency Responders or Campus Security if they are on the scene
  • Call 000 and Campus Security once it is safe to do so.

2. Hide

  • If it is not possible to evacuate, find a place to hide where the violent offender is less likely to find you.
    • It should be out of the offender’s view, provide protection and not trap or restrict your options for movement.
    • If possible, lock or secure the door and block the door with any heavy furniture.
  • If the offender approaches your hiding spot, silence any phones, hide behind large items and remain quiet.
  • Stay there until you are sure it is safe, or Emergency Responders or Campus Security come along.

3. Take Action

  • As a last resort and when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt the offender.
  • Act as aggressively as you can against them, throw items or improvise weapons or make a scene and start yelling. Commit to your actions.

5. Injury or Illness

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

Minor Injury or Illness:

  • Contact the First Aid Officer nearest to your location.
  • Assist the person who is injured, make them comfortable and provide privacy.
  • Report the injury/illness to the relevant Dean or Manager in the first instance and then to Manager, Risk and Compliance by completing the Incident/Injury Report.

Major Injury or Illness:

  • Assess the situation for any possible dangers to you or another person and take action.
  • Alert anyone around you.
  • Call Campus Security and/or contact the First Aid Officer nearest to your location.
  • If an ambulance is required, ask someone to guide the ambulance to the exact location.
  • Report the injury/illness to the relevant Dean or Manager in the first instance and then to Manager, Risk and Compliance by completing the Incident/Injury Report.

6. Mental Health Crisis

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

A mental health crisis may be the result of an illness, trauma or substance abuse.

Assess whether the person experiencing the crisis is a danger to you or others. If so, refer to the Violent Offender page.

If there appears to be no immediate risk:

Alert:

  • Contact Campus Security.
  • Contact the Counselling Services if it relates to a student, or contact the Staffing Office for information about the Employee Assistance Program if it relates to a staff member.

Assist:

  • Reassure the person that help is on its way and that you will stay there with them until they arrive.
  • Listen and talk to them in a manner that is direct, calm and non-judgemental.
  • Ask someone to guide the Campus Security or other services to the location.

7. Threats by Social Media

This relates to any threat made to any person or group related to the University over any form of social media.

Reaction:

  • Do not reply or react online to the threat made on social media.
  • Do not discuss or spread communication about the threat unnecessarily.
  • Do take a photo or copy of the threat if possible.

Alert:

  • Alert the relevant Dean of the School or Head of Campus of the threat seen on social media.
  • Provide details of what was threatened, including any photos or copies you might have made.
8. Bomb Threats

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

Phoned Bomb Threat

  • Stay calm and do not hang up. If you have caller ID, write down the displayed number.
  • Try to get the attention of someone nearby and ask them to call Campus Security immediately.
  • Try to keep them on the phone and collect as much information as possible about the bomb: when is it going to explode; where is it; what kind of bomb is it; did you place the bomb; who are you?
  • Follow any instructions from Campus Security or Emergency Responders.

Written Bomb Threat

  • Avoid unnecessary handling or circulation of the threat.
  • Place any physical evidence in a plastic sleeve and immediately call Campus Security.
  • Follow any instructions from Campus Security.

9. Chemical Spills or Gas Leak

If there is an immediate life threatening emergency to you or another person, call 000.

Assess:

  • Take any necessary steps to protect your safety and the safety of others.
  • Contain the spill, if safe to do so. Secure the area by closing and locking doors, posting signs to keep others out.
  • Evacuate the area if necessary.

Alert:

  • Call Campus Security if it is highly hazardous and requires immediate action.
  • Tell the people around you, keep people out of the area.
  • Follow the instructions of Campus Security and/or Emergency Responders.
  • Report the incident to the Head of Campus.

10. Assistance for People with Disability

Mobility Impairments:

  • Lifts are not to be used in the case of a fire, and this may mean that people who are mobility-impaired may need some assistance to evacuate:
    • Report this to the Building Warden, who will assign someone to stay with the person who is mobility-impaired.
    • The person who is mobility-impaired and their assistant will use alternative routes.
    • If there are no alternative routes, the assistant will move the person who is mobility-impaired to a safe location (.i.e. fire stairs) and remain with them.
    • Emergency responders will be notified of this.

Other Impairments:

  • If you come across someone with another impairment during an evacuation, offer assistance if they need it and it is safe to do so.

Note: people with impairments can request the development of a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan through their School or the Academic Enabling and Support Centre.
