Examination Rules and Procedures

  • Students should assemble outside the appropriate room at least ten minutes prior to the indicated commencement time. Students arriving more than 20 minutes after the commencement of the examination will not be permitted to enter the examination room and will be deemed to be absent from the examination. No additional time is available to students arriving late for an examination.

  • Students will need to identify themselves at each examination by name and student number. The University STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARD is required for this purpose and MUST be presented at each examination. Examination scripts will be identified by student number only.

  • Students will not be permitted to leave the examination room in the first or last 20 minutes of the scheduled examination period. Students needing to leave the examination room (and wishing to return) may do so only in the company of an invigilator.

  • No communication between students is permissible during the period of the examination; no access to unauthorised materials is permissible. Authorised materials will be notified for individual examinations.

  • Students will be required to comply with the instructions of the invigilators throughout the examination period.

  • Examination papers must be written in ink unless otherwise specified in individual examination papers.

  • Students found to be in breach of examination rules will be dealt with according to University regulations - see General Regulation 19 - Discipline.

  • Unless otherwise indicated, students may only have writing materials (pens, pencils, ruler) on the exam desk for the duration of the exam. Bottles of water, tissues and cough lozenges may be allowed on the exam desk at the discretion of the Chief Invigilator and the lecturer responsible for that examination or their delegate.

  • International students are not permitted to use foreign language translation dictionaries unless specified for an individual examination.

Personal Belongings

  • Personal belongings must be stowed underneath your chair for the duration of the exam. Mobile phones MUST be switched off prior to entering an exam venue and for the duration of the exam.

Practical Examinations

  • All practical examinations are subject to the same rules and procedures as theory examinations. Students should contact their respective Colleges for their appointment time. Any student unable to attend a practical examination at the scheduled time will be required to apply for a deferred assessment (see Deferred Examinations below for the correct procedure for applying) and must provide supporting documentation in order to have their request to reschedule their practical examination considered. Students missing their scheduled time without there being valid extenuating circumstances will be issued with a Fail grade.

Deferred Examinations

  • An offer of a deferred examination due to absence from an examination will be given only in extreme and urgent situations (such as accident or illness) and any requests for such consideration must be supported by documentary evidence.

  • If you wish to apply for a deferred examination due to missing an examination because of an extreme and urgent situation please complete the Application for Deferred Assessment and Statutory Declaration for Deferred Assessment. Note: a separate Statutory Declaration must be completed for each unit for which deferred assessment is being requested.

  • The original, fully completed and signed Application for Deferred Assessment and Statutory Declaration for Deferred Assessment and the accompanying documentary evidence must be submitted to Student Administration within 3 working days after the relevant scheduled examination. Applications received after this time will usually not be considered.

  • Deferred examinations normally will not be granted on the grounds that a student mistook the time or venue of an examination.
