Advanced Standing and Credit Transfer

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing, also known as credit transfer, is credit granted towards a degree program for study already undertaken. By giving recognition to prior learning, advanced standing prevents the unnecessary duplication of study and can save time and money.

The availability of advanced standing does not guarantee entry into a particular course. In some cases there are high levels of competition for places and in other cases applicants may need to have fulfilled other requirements to gain entry. Detailed information on regulations governing the awarding of Advanced Standing may be accessed from the University's General Regulations.

Advanced Standing Information Sheet

Application for advanced standing

Based on the information contained on the University website and/or discussions with a course adviser, if you feel you may be eligible for advanced standing, you should follow the instructions below:

  1. Make application for entry to the course of your choice at Notre Dame. You should read carefully the Admissions Guide and submit your Application for Admission by the required deadline.
  2. Once you have been notified that you have been granted an admissions interview, you can request an Application for Advance Standing Form from the Admissions Centre. There are three forms available depending on your situation:

    a) one for the transfer of units from one incomplete course to the course you are applying for Advanced Standing - Credit Transfer
    b) one to apply for exemption from a unit or units with or without credit or to propose the granting of general credits Advanced Standing – Exemptions
    c) one for advanced standing based on work experience or uncredentialed learning Advanced Standing – Uncredentialed Experience

  3. Fill in your personal details and information regarding your previous studies on the Application for Advanced Standing form and take it with you to your admissions interview. You may discuss the possibility of advanced standing with the interviewer, though no confirmation may be provided until all documentation is complete.
  4. If you receive an offer of a place in your course of choice, you should attach the Application for Advanced Standing form to your acceptance form and forward it to the Admissions Centre. You must also attach the outline of the units of study you completed previously, including assessment and teaching structure to allow an assessment of relevance and comparability to be made. Unit outlines are available from universities' handbooks and/or websites. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure these documents are provided.
These documents should be forwarded no later than two weeks prior to the start of semester in order for notification to occur before the commencement of the semester.
  5. You will receive written notification of the outcome of your application before the end of the first week of semester.

Courses and units at Notre Dame

To be awarded a particular degree, students must complete the required number of units for that particular degree or course program. Each unit of study is normally of 3-credit value, and each year, most full-time students will complete 8 units, that is, 24 credit points, of study.

Articulation from TAFE

The University of Notre Dame Australia welcomes applicants with a previous record of study at TAFE. A number of agreements are in place between the University and TAFEWA to enable graduates of TAFEWA award courses to apply for advanced standing towards their study at Notre Dame.
