Simon Moore-Crouch (Bachelor of Communications and Bachelor of Commerce)
Promotions and Communications Co-ordinator
Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA)

I'm responsible for all the communications and media activity at the WACA as well as all our promotional activities. My major tasks are organising media conferences and player interviews, writing media releases, writing and editing the WACA website and organising player appearances. Plus I get to watch a lot of cricket!

I was doing the radio unit at Notre Dame and was looking to interview one of the Warriors players for my assignment and stumbled across a job ad on the WACA website. I called up the HR co-ordinator and had a chat with her about the job to find out what type of person they were looking for and I tailored my application to that, scored an interview and then was lucky enough to land the job. That was how I got my original position as Communications Officer back in November and since then I've been promoted twice to my current position!

The two things that made me stand out were (i) the practical real life experience I had as a result of studying at Notre Dame ie. I had actually already done some of the tasks my job entails while I was at university, and (ii) going the extra mile in my application ie. I called the HR co-ordinator and introduced myself and spoke to her about my application before I put it in.

Steven McDougall (Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Politics and History)
Research Officer, Policy Division
Department of Premier and Cabinet

My role involves assisting t he Premier’s Office with research, analysis of Government policies and tracking their implementation, I also assist with co-ordination of Question Time and Parliamentary debates. The sound knowledge of Australian political process I had learnt at University, plus the practical experience I had gathered through the University’s internship program really helped me secure this position.

My advice to other students is pick a career that interests you, maintain focus though the period of your study, try and gain as much practical experience as possible before you graduate and utilise the contacts you make while at University.

Ashley Millar (Bachelor of Environmental Studies)
National Park Ranger - Cape Range/Ningaloo Marine Park
Dept. Conservation and Land Management

My role as a National Park Ranger in the Exmouth District primarily involves operational works in Cape Range National Park and the Ningaloo Marine Park. Because this role has conservation and a visitor focus, on any given day I could be leading a tour on the Yardie Creek Boat or maintaining or constructing new visitor facilities right through to baiting for feral animals under CALM's Western Shield program. It's a diverse job and every day is different so I'm always learning.

My experience in dealing with people which I learnt from my experience as a youth worker at St Vinnies, East Timor immersion experience through NDA and working in interpretive programs at Western Power and CALM as well as the volunteer work I carried out at uni for CALM really helped my application for this position.

Anni Fordham

Anni is a Broadcast Supervisor with Media Monitors New Zealand.

“our basic function is to keep an eye on the news for business and government organisations. If there's a breaking story that affects a client, we alert them straight away. We can then send them a copy of the item in whatever form they prefer (transcript, audio clip, video, DVD etc). I started in February as a Broadcast Monitor and was recently promoted to Broadcast Supervisor, overseeing the monitoring of about 40 different radio and television broadcasts. It has been a big transition for me, being younger than most of the people I am supervising! It's pretty interesting for a current affairs addict like me - kind of like working in a newsroom.

Reisha Hartley – BA Honours 2005

As a year 12 student I found the idea of choosing a degree, and furthermore a university, a daunting notion. That was until I attended a Notre Dame open day and learnt of their fantastic Arts program which combined both practical and theoretical studies. At ND I was able to get as involved as I wanted and during my degree I joined the Student Association, traveled to East Timor to teach English and volunteered in a remote indigenous community. I was also able to complete an Honours thesis on the experience of Sudanese refugee children in the WA education system.

Having recently completed my degree I have moved into the area of youth services. I am currently working for the Joondalup City Council as a Youth Development Officer researching, implementing and running a number of programs. My degree and experience has also landed me a position with the AUSAID Youth Ambassador for Development program and in late 06 I will travel to Mongolia for a year. I will be working with World Vision International and their child and youth participation program.

I have also been supported by the University to promote my Honours research and I recently presented at the Western Australian Institute for Education Research (WAIER) forum. I am looking forward to continuing my research after I return from Mongolia.
