After completing my Bachelor of Science in Field Ecology at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia (1991), I commenced my career as a Naturalist and Outdoor Educator. Through this work, I developed a keen interest in the ideological underpinnings of the human/Nature relationship, which led me to complete a Master’s in Holistic Science at Schumacher College (2003) in Devon, U.K. There, I wrote a thesis that encouraged an embodied and holistic understanding of our way of being in the world titled:Us and Them: Primate Science and the Union of the Rational Self with the Intuitive Self.
In pondering the reasons for our current social and environmental problems, a specific interest in the intersection between modern Western masculine identities and Nature emerged. It occurred to me that the problems we are facing have been created and worsened by men—Western men in particular. From this insight I pursued my doctorate through a project titled: A Declaration of Caring: Towards an ecological masculinism. My thesis ecologised masculinities theory and posited an ecomasculinity praxis that reawakened men’s capacity to care for Others along with the self. My research countered the ethics of daring that currently dominate Western malestreams by aligning men with sustainability. Using a multidisciplinary approach to the research, I have constructed ecological masculinism as a new conversation in ecophilosophy that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with deep ecology, social ecology and ecological (eco)feminism in creating a Living Earth Ethics that prioritises care. In doing so I believe we will be better able to create a deep and long-range sustainable future.
I currently serve as a Research Associate at Murdoch University’s Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy and lecture at The University of Notre Dame Australia in Sustainable Development Practices.
