COUNSELLING

The Counselling program at Notre Dame offers an integrated and organised course of instruction leading to professional qualifications in Counselling.

The courses adopt a humanistic and existentialist orientation to theory and practice following a tradition in Psychology and Counselling developed by such people as Carl Rogers, Fritz Perls, William Glasser and Gerard Egan.

The programs seek to assist a holistic development of persons utilising their strengths, so that they can realise their potential as individuals in a process conceived of as lifelong and dynamic.  To this end, one of the main goals of these courses is personal development through group experiential work. Personal growth for students is therefore a constant theme throughout the courses.

Students of Counselling are encouraged to value the privilege of being in service to others while at the same time nurturing themselves.

PRACTICAL PLACEMENTS

Counselling experience/practice will be arranged by Notre Dame in conjunction with the Practicum Coordinator and will be closely supervised, by staff at Notre Dame. It is envisaged that some students may undertake their experience/practice at their place of employment eg: those pursuing the Graduate Diploma in Counselling, but that others will be able to gain counselling practice in locations approved by the University. Links have already been made with established training organisations who are willing to cooperate in the program by providing opportunities for students to practise their skills, and their participation is warmly welcomed.

Contact the Practicum Coordinator in your school for more information.

DOUBLE DEGREES

Notre Dame’s Bachelor of Counselling/Behavioural Science, unique in Western Australia, combines personal, spiritual and caring dimensions in a highly practical, skills-based program.  Students complete a foundation year where they will study theories and approaches to counselling, personal growth and be introduced to counselling skills.  A range of electives will provide opportunities to focus on special interest areas, which include depression, stress and anxiety.
