School of Medicine Medallions

The bare wooden cross is the icon of our Christian tradition.

It is the icon placed in every room used for teaching at The University of Notre Dame Australia. As such it represents Christ’s love for people, through suffering and sacrifice, for our salvation.

Entwining the cross is the stethoscope, symbol of medical practitioners who relieve humanity’s suffering and cure disease through modern technological miracles.

This is reminiscent of the ancient symbol of the bronzed serpent on the staff, to which the sick sought a miracle cure trusting in the Word of God. By embracing the message of Christ’s love, Notre Dame’s School of Medicine graduates are inspired to excellence in their professional lives, practised with compassion, duty, care and devotion for their patients.
