Welcome from Prof William Gibson

Welcome from Professor WILLIAM GIBSON

It is a privilege and a pleasure to welcome you to the School of Health Sciences.

Our programs produce highly skilled graduates with a strong service ethos. Our emphasis on critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning produces work-ready graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the workplace.

Within Health Sciences our degrees are accredited by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, the International Union for Health Promotion and Education and Exercise & Sports Science Australia. Our degrees reflect a diverse range of disciplines such as education, biomedical science, health promotion, exercise prescription and Outdoor Recreation.

A special feature of Notre Dame’s Health Sciences programs is the practicum and internship experiences that are a compulsory requirement of your studies. Your internship will take place in public and private hospitals, medical practice centres, community health centres, pathology laboratories, health promotion agencies, schools and voluntary service agencies. These experiences will maximise your employment prospects and guide your career aspirations prior to graduation.

Our fully-accredited, four-year undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy provides a rigorous educational experience designed to encourage active learning. The curriculum promotes acquisition of knowledge and skills and balances this with the clinical ability to apply these skills in the practice of physiotherapy. Students undertake extensive and early clinical training which provides the practical skills and experiences necessary to facilitate an effective transition from study to work.

We also offer the option of a Bachelor of Physiotherapy program with Honours and a double degree of Physiotherapy and Exercise & Sport Science. Each of these programs provide a curriculum that is fully accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council and allow for registration as a physiotherapist through the Physiotherapy Board of Australia.

The world of health care is changing. Professional boundaries are evolving and status quo is no longer an option. Our staff are highly accessible and we offer small class sizes to provide individual attention and prepare our students for future professional life. Students are supported and mentored throughout the program by professionals, teachers and experts in their fields. Our staff know our students names and care about their professional and personal growth.
