Objects of the School of Philosophy and Theology, Fremantle

The School of Philosophy and Theology in Fremantle, through its programs of teaching and research, introduces students to the rich Catholic liberal arts and faith tradition. It does this through a critical and creative dialogue about the deeper questions of life and purpose.

By bringing inquiry and teaching into a fruitful exchange with Catholic faith and values our school seeks to provide students with a university education that enables them to recognise and to promote the power of ideas and ideals in the transformation of the world.

The School teaches the introductory units in Theology, Philosophy and Ethics which constitute the University’s Core Curriculum. These units provide a liberal arts base to students’ more specialised studies.

The School of Philosophy and Theology also aims:

a. To provide an excellent standard of teaching, scholarship and research by opening to scholars and students alike the rich possibilities flowing from the integration of the life of the mind with that of the spirit. Being “Catholic” in the truest sense, calls for dialogue and collaboration with all in the search for meaning, wisdom and truth.

b. To open to all who make up the Notre Dame community of scholarship and learning, the richness of the Catholic tradition by promoting in its teaching and research, a creative and critical dialogue between Catholic faith and culture.  Such a dialogue will provide an invaluable spiritual and ethical basis for the professions.

c.To create a community built on respect for the dignity and freedom of every person, characterised by a love of learning, a seeking of wisdom and a desire for God.
