Health Insurance

Health Insurance

As a condition of student visa approval, the Australian Government requires all overseas students to take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Before your arrival, the University of Notre Dame Australia insures you with OSHC World Care. OSHC WorldCare will cover you for medical expenses only within Australia. Any existing health insurance you have is additional to this insurance policy. It is suggested that you retain any insurance cover in the United States and check that it covers your time in transit to other countries.

Some study abroad agreements cover the cost of OSHC and others do not, in which case the student is invoiced for the amount of A$190 (2009 rates) in week 3. Check with your Study Abroad Office regarding your School’s position on this matter.

What does it cover?

Overseas student health cover (OSHC) is health insurance that provides cover for the costs of:

  • Out of hospital medical treatment
  • In hospital medical treatment
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Emergency ambulance assistance

OSHC Worldcare provides a safety net for overseas students, similar to that provided to Australians through Medicare. Additionally, OSHC Worldcare also includes access to some private hospitals and day surgeries, emergency ambulance cover and benefits for pharmaceuticals.
