Arrival in Sydney

Sydney airport may appear to be a large and confusing building but don’t be deceived. With a little research and preparation your arrival should be smooth and hassle-free. This guide will hopefully make your entry into the city that much easier by supplying a map of the airport as well as several different options for travel to your accommodation.

Airport Shuttles

Airport shuttles are a great way of travelling to and from the airport. They can be booked out privately or you can share with other passengers, which means more stops along the way. You will need to book the shuttles in advance so they can meet you at your arrival gate. The websites below are for two shuttle services that operate out of Sydney airport.

Trains

Trains are a cheaper mode of travel, easily accessible and extremely efficient. The station is situated at the northern end of the International terminal and directly between T2 and T3 Domestic terminals. It is readily accessible from the arrivals level via an escalator or elevator.

Trains run approximately every 10 minutes into the city circle with the journey taking roughly 13 minutes.

If you are travelling to the outer suburbs of Sydney, tickets can be purchased at both the domestic and international terminals. Simply catch the train from either terminal and get off at Central Station for transfer to all suburban services or to walk/taxi on to your accommodation if you are staying in the city. The Notre Dame Sydney Campus at Broadway is about a 10 minute walk from Central Train Station, however if you have heavy bags you might prefer to take a taxi or bus. The closest train station to the Sydney Campus at Darlinghurst is Museum which is about a 15 minute walk away.

There is a comprehensive website that plans out your trip for you using the trains, busses and ferries. It also contains maps as well as ticketing information. See www.airportlink.com.au.

Taxis

There are designated taxi stands at the front of both the international and domestic terminals. An approximate guide of fares is as follows:
Sydney Airport to:

  • Sydney City $25
  • North Sydney $35
  • Manly $50
  • Parramatta $75
  • Liverpool $40
  • Cronulla $35

Passengers are also required to pay for any bridge or road tolls on top of the normal fare. There is a $2.50 airport toll payable by all passengers departing from either of the Sydney airport terminals.
(These prices are current as of 2008 and are subject to change)

A variety of taxi companies service the area. Here are the websites of a few of them:
