Morning Prayer: 22 October (Year 1)

We gather in private reflection and personal preparation for prayer. The leaders invites us to share our intentions for morning prayer.

All:            In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Generous God, mindful of all that we have, we come to you with grateful hearts. May this morning prayer increase our gratitude and encourage us to seek to share the goodness of your creation especially with those in need. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All:       Amen.

Gospel   Lk 12:13-21

A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’

Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do; I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time.” But God said to him, “Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?” So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God.’

Time for Silent Reflection
In what ways do I store up more than I need?
How might I offer good things to others?
What is one way I can try to make myself rich in the sight of God?Psalm

Psalm (All pray together)

Antiphon:      Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; he has come to his people.

He has raised up for us a mighty saviour
in the house of David his servant,
as he promised by the lips of holy men,
those who were his prophets from of old.

A saviour who would free us from our foes,
from the hands of all who hate us.
So his love for our fathers is fulfilled
and his holy covenant remembered.

He swore to Abraham our father
to grant us, that free from fear,
and saved from the hands of our foes,
we might serve him in holiness and justice
all the days of our life in his presence.

Antiphon: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; he has come to his people.

Intercessions

Let us come to Jesus our Master, who is our model and guide.

  1. That we may be generous and just. Lord, hear us.
  2. That we may avoid greed and seflishness. Lord, hear us.
  3. That we may give to those in need without counting the cost. Lord, hear us.
  4. For what else do we pray this day?

Gathering our prayers and praises into one, we pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father . . .

Concluding Prayer

Loving God, touch our hearts this morning and recreate them as hearts that beat with compassion. Help us to be just and honest in dealing with our goods and those in need. May we go forth into this day as persons who live and pray with the likeness of your Son as our guide. We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord.

All:                   Amen.

Leader:           May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
All:                   Amen.
Leader:           Go in the peace of Christ.
All:                   Thanks be to God
As we leave we share with one another a sign of peace.
