Spanish legal expert welcomed by graduating Law students
14 November 2013
Final year Law students at The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Sydney Campus were excited to have their last class delivered by internationally renowned expert in alternative dispute resolution, Associate Professor Balvinder Powar, who challenged their thinking.
In an exclusive visit, Assoc Prof Powar from the School of Business at IE University in Madrid, Spain, presented a masterclass on Conflict Resolution to the School of Law’s Alternative Dispute Resolution class on 30 October 2013.
This extremely fortunate opportunity was made possible through the invitation of Senior Lecturer in the School of Law, Francisco Esparraga. It was the only university visit Assoc Prof Powar made during his visit to Australia.
Assoc Prof Powar is a business and finance graduate who has extensive experience working on business, social, cultural, media and technological projects in Spain and other countries across the world.
For graduating student, Kate Angus, Assoc Prof Powar’s presentation challenged her to think more logically and critically in developing an “idea that would make a dent on the universe”.
“As a student entering the legal profession in a mere few months, I found that this was a timely reminder to always challenge the status quo if I wanted to see progression and development,” Kate said.
“The legal profession is often criticised for being resistant to change, operating on a dated business model which has been tried and tested.
“Assoc Prof Powar was able to instil in us a sense of responsibility for changing these mentalities, and noted that the mechanisms associated with alternative dispute resolution was one such way in which the traditional litigious-based problem-solving status quo of the legal profession has been challenged, to a degree of great success.”
Assoc. Prof. Powar is the Chief Communications Officer and Executive Board member of BOOSTER Space Industries – a pioneering international sub-orbital space and aerospace consortium.
“Assoc Prof Powar conveyed so much in so little time with much enthusiasm and vibrancy,” Student, Caroline Mead, said.
“He ensured the class was thoroughly entertained with his 'boys-own-tales' of sub-orbital space travel and thought-provoking activities. Importantly, the workshop really helped to cement the more theoretical values of alternative dispute resolution that Mr Esparraga has taught us throughout the course.”
“The mediation workshop conducted by Assoc Prof Powar was a fabulous way to finish a semester on ADR.”
Mr Esparraga said the Notre Dame’s School of Law in Sydney was privileged to have Assoc Prof Powar speak with students.
“Balvinder is a strong advocate of self empowerment and pro-activeness to achieve one’s goals, with his favourite quote being that of Mahatma Gandhi: ‘Be the change you want to see in the word’,” Mr Esparraga said.
“This most interesting and interactive class he presented to students in their final class of Law studies at Notre Dame will put these graduands in great stead for a career in the legal world.”
