Fr Andrew Chen OMI has been appointed as Campus Chaplain on The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus to continue the University’s Catholic mission of providing an excellent educational experience underpinned by pastoral care for all students.

Fr Andrew said he was delighted to be part of the great Notre Dame community as part of the University’s Campus Ministry – a body which models the University’s Objects and provides outreach opportunities for students and staff.

“I am excited about the possibilities and opportunities to work with students in their study environment, as well as continue to explore the world of research,” Fr Andrew said.

“My hope is that the students will grow in faith and continue to develop into future leaders through their time at Notre Dame.”

Born into a Catholic family in south-eastern China, Fr Andrew felt he had a calling from an early age to serve Christ. Growing up in a non-theistic society, his father was imprisoned for his commitment to faith.

After arriving in Australia with his family in 1998, Fr Andrew joined the Oblates of Mary Immaculate soon after. In 2008, he was ordained a priest on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady – one of the most significant feast days in the Catholic Church’s calendar.

Fr Andrew’s first place of ministry was in the Oblate Parish of St David in Adelaide, before taking a role at Mazenod College in Melbourne for three years. Before joining Notre Dame, Fr Andrew was assistant priest at the Parish of St Patrick in Fremantle.

“I would hope to share with the staff and students of Notre Dame the joy, humility and gentleness of our faith,” Fr Andrew said.

Mass is celebrated daily on Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus from 12.35pm. Services are also held on Sunday evening at 6pm. For more information, please contact Campus Minister, Tom Gannon, via email
