Notre Dame fundraiser a life-changer for impoverished African community

Life-changing education opportunities and medical assistance will flow to dozens of children in a remote, impoverished village in Tanzania, thanks to the fundraising efforts by students at the University of Notre Dame Australia.

The students recently presented a cheque for $50,000 to the charitable organisation So They Can, a partner charity of Notre Dame which supports the Tanzania Service Learning Immersion Project led by the University.

Money raised will go towards the supporting the charity’s upcoming volunteer trip where 53 students from Notre Dame’s Schools of Education and Medicine will spend three weeks working within schools and medical clinics in the small town of Babati, situated in the Manyara Region of Tanzania.

“Our aim before the trip was to raise money that we could take with us, and spend time working with community members to decide how the money could be spent to make the biggest impact,” said Madeline Steel, a Bachelor of Primary Education student, who is travelling to Tanzania this month.

Sarah Palmer, a first year Doctor of Medicine student said she is very excited to be travelling to Tanzania. “It is an incredible opportunity to contribute to the wider global community and do my part to work towards achieving social justice.”

“Our aim is to improve the health of the individuals attending the clinics and implement strategies to improve the health outcomes for the people living in the town,” she said.

The project which began in 2010 has seen more than 150 Notre Dame students travel overseas to connect with people living in impoverished communities.

Senior Lecturer Timothy Perkins from The School of Education at Notre Dame said the program has greatly contributed to supporting student learning and development and continues to add value to their overall university experience.

“Students are craving opportunities to be involved in authentic experience which take them out of the familiar and into the real world,” said Perkins, who has led the project since its inception.

“For our students, to go overseas and experience how other people in the world live and the struggles they face, is an incredible experience.”
