Professor Joan Squelch appointed Dean of Fremantle Law School

Professor Joan Squelch has been appointed
Dean of Notre Dame’s School of Law, Fremantle.

Professor Joan Squelch has been appointed Dean of The University of Notre Dame Australia’s School of Law, Fremantle.

Professor Squelch takes the place of Professor Doug Hodgson who has retired after serving five years in the role. He recently led celebrations for the School’s 20th anniversary.

Since joining the University’s Law School in 2013, Professor Squelch has held several leadership roles, including Assistant Dean of Teaching and Learning, and is currently the Chair of the Notre Dame Schools of Law Research Committee.

She also holds the positions of Commissioner of the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia (CECWA) and the Chair of the CECWA Curriculum Subcommittee, and is a member of the Australasian Law Teachers Association and the NSW and WA Law Societies.

Before joining Notre Dame she was Head of School of Business Law and Taxation, and Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor of the Curtin University Business School.

“Joan is a passionate educator, with a background in teaching prior to law, and is strongly committed to the continued success of the School of Law and the University,” Professor Celia Hammond, Notre Dame’s Vice Chancellor, said.

Professor Squelch obtained a Master of Education and Doctor of Education from the University of South Africa –exploring both multicultural education and the constitutional status and management of private schools in South Africa as part of her research. She then completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in law at the University of South Africa and the University of Western Australia.

After graduating with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from The College of Law, Sydney, she was admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in August 2006.

Professor Squelch is an internationally-published author of more than 50 book chapters and journal articles covering topics such as: higher education and the law, workplace bullying, school discipline, school governance, as well as teachers and their social media activities. She has also presented papers at 37 domestic and international conferences.
