AMPitup: Adolescent Movement Program

The AMPitup program operates Mondays and Thursdays 4pm-5.30pm each University semester.  Participants train with a student enrolled in the Graduate Diploma and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science, Bachelor of Health and Physical Education or Bachelor of Physiotherapy/Exercise Science on individually designed programs to develop aerobic fitness, strength, and flexibility and to improve motor skills.  The program is overseen by experienced academics and an accredited exercise physiologist.

The clinic operates in the “state of the art” John Bloomfield Exercise Laboratory in the Institute for Health and Rehabilitation Research, the University of Notre Dame Australia.   The clinic is fitted out with a comprehensive suite of exercise equipment and a heated hydrotherapy pool.  This setting is ideal to improve skill and fitness in a supportive, fun and non-competitive setting.  A long term aim of the program is to develop the skill and confidence in the participants to participate as adults in community-based exercise settings.

To participate in the program, adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years are screened using a standardised test of motor development.  They must also have a history of movement difficulties or withdrawal from movement opportunities.  While most participants have Developmental Coordination Disorder, some have other conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD.
