The Unit involves a study and actual practice in the teaching of Religion in Life, a practical ecumenical Christian set of texts used widely for religious education in both government and non-government schools throughout Australia.

ED4120 Introduction to Teaching and the Curriculum Framework
This unit examines, in an exploratory way, key ideas about teaching and learning, the role of the teacher, the characteristics of effective teachers and schools. It explores the purpose and nature of schools. It introduces students to the essentials of lesson planning and to oral communication skills associated with teaching. Students are also introduced to the Curriculum Framework , a key document directing and shaping the approach to education taken in all Western Australian schools.

ED4125 Religious Studies in Australian Schools 1
This Unit investigates the phenomenon of religious experience as expressed by people in major religions around the world and within Australian society. This also includes an inquiry into the uniqueness and significance of Aboriginal spirituality to Australian communities today. From this initial study of world religions, the Unit turns its attention to special interest topics affecting the world and Australian society today: the tension between and within different religions, the role of women within the major religions today, the relationship between religion and science and the development of other beliefs systems. It is designed to assist future teachers who intend to teach in religious and/or State schools to understand the religious heritage and practices of many of their students in their classes. ED4132 Working with Indigenous Students
Consideration is given to the distinctive learning styles of Aboriginal peoples and their implications for curriculum design, for the choice of syllabus content and teaching strategies, and for the appropriate social organisation of schools and classrooms. Particular attention is given to the importance in remote areas of assisting Aboriginal children to acquire Standard Australian English. The unit examines the linguistic needs of Aboriginal children and the appropriateness of conventional approaches to the diagnosis and support of children with specific learning needs. Students are exposed to a variety of innovative developments which have taken place in Kimberley Catholic schools.

The unit is practical in nature, developing both skills and knowledge. It explores the modern concept of teaching as a "profession'. The nature of professions and professionalism and the implications of this for teacher's work and conduct are examined. The legal responsibilities of teaching professionals, such as duty of care and reporting of children at risk of abuse, are considered along with the professional and collegial demands on the teacher in the school context. This unit is offered in two modules. Part I Creative Play Experiences for Young Children (0-8) Play is the work of young children. In this unit students learn the importance of play and the types of play that are developmentally appropriate for children from birth to eight years. Examples of play experiences covered in this unit meet the needs of non-mobile infants, toddlers and pre-school aged children. It focuses particularly on their God concepts, the role of imagination and on children's spiritual capacity for wonder and awe. It also emphasises facilitating children's ability to reflect and to talk to and about God. It draws on Australian and overseas research on the influence of parental images of God, the role of family, community and school in religious socialisation and the development of religious thinking. A project involving a practical study of "God-talk' with young children is an essential element of the unit.

ED4980 Religious Education Curriculum and Planning Issues

This unit examines relevant theory related to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in education and applies this to religious education. It examines a range of planning, teaching, assessment and reporting processes and roles. It considers the development of the religious education curriculum within the total religious education of the Catholic School and the interrelationships of these. It critically analyses a range of resources available to the religious education co-ordinator in the planning process. It explores the creative use of recent Catholic Education Office Guidelines; critically analyses the contribution of particular models; and religious education text books to the planning and teaching process of religious education. It provides practitioners with an opportunity to critique their own and others practice and to apply recent developments of curriculum practice to the field of religious education.

ED4991 Teaching Internship (K-7 Course Only)

In this unit student-teachers further develop their teaching skills. Student-teachers observe, program, sequence, plan and teach a number of lessons in a variety of curriculum learning areas, gradually building to a substantial teaching load by the end of the 10 week block. This unit provides the student with an opportunity to participate in a broad range of co-curricula and extra-curricula activities of the school and to develop an understanding of the dynamics and culture of the day-to-day life of a school. It also facilitates progressive development of skills needed for effective interpersonal involvement in the classroom, school and wider school community. During this practicum students increasingly accept the role of a classroom teacher. They develop added confidence as a teacher as they accept increasing responsibility for planning and implementing their programs and for evaluating their own effectiveness, personal suitability and commitment.

ED4993 School Experience 1 (K-7 Course Only)
Pre-Requisite: ED4935
The unit is a school experience program for one school term. Student-teachers teach a number of lessons in to the same class in a particular Learning Area(s). Observation of the teaching of the experienced tutor teacher and working with small groups under the direction of the teacher are other key components of the School Experience. Each student-teacher is assessed for developing competence and a pass is required for progression to the School Experience 2.

EDV4110 Introduction to VET & the Australian Training System
The unit aims to develop an understanding of Vocational Education and Training and the requirements surrounding its delivery, accreditation and quality control. In particular, it examines the role of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) and the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). Students will explore specific VET initiatives - VET-in-schools, traineeships, apprenticeships - and the role of Registered Training Organisations (RTO's), State accreditation procedures and the structure and application of training packages.

EDV4120 Assessment and Evaluation in VET
Pre-Requisite: EDV4110
The unit aims to develop an understanding of assessment and evaluation within the Australian vocational education and training system. In particular it will examine on and off-the-job assessment, the graded assessment model, skills recognition and authentic tasks. Focus will also be on identifying links to competency based assessment and general curriculum education outcomes. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to develop their own assessments.

EDV4140 Managing VET Programs in Schools (Project)
Pre-Requisites: EDV2110 or EDV4110; EDV2210 or EDV4210; EDV3120 or EDV4120; EDV3250 or EDV4250
The unit will be delivered as a project based subject, with student contact occurring only during weeks one, seven and thirteen. Students will be required to research and review an innovative program currently implemented in a school environment. Students' will need to review their chosen program and all associated requirements either from the perspective of a school or a RTO. Areas of learning covered will include: VET in schools policies, National agendas, Curriculum Council procedures, funding arrangements, registration and enrolment procedures, industry consultation, partnership arrangements and links with other agencies.

EDV4210 VET: Teaching and Training strategies
Pre-Requisite: EDV4110
The unit aims to develop an understanding of Vocational Education and Training and the requirements surrounding its delivery. In particular, it examines the role of the trainer / teacher within the VET sector. Students will explore generic teaching methodologies as well as specific VET initiatives. The importance of language, literacy and numeracy, Mayer Key Competencies, learning theories and the assessment tool as a training strategy, will all be reviewed.

EDV4250 Design and Implementation of VET in Schools
Pre-Requisite: EDV4110
The unit aims to develop an understanding of both the design and implementation processes required for the viable adoption of VET programs in schools. Areas of learning covered include: integration of competency based training, embedding units of competency, structured workplace learning and VET in the W.A. Certificate of Education. Traineeships, school clusters, partnerships with RTO's and Curriculum Council and Department of Education and Training requirements and resources are also addressed. Focus will be placed on ensuring the school practitioner meets relevant AQTF requirements with regards to the above practices.

EDV4294 Return-to-industry Practicum
Pre-Requisite: EDV4110
The unit provides students with the opportunity to access current industry practices, technology and culture.
Students will be required to participate within a relevant industry organisation, as agreed to by their course coordinator. During the experience, participants will complete a minimum of one hundred and fifty (150) hours of either paid or voluntary employment relevant to their current "trade' qualification. Avenues for on-going industry consultation and networking will be established, along with access to contemporary information on industry trends. Successful completion of this unit is essential for meeting AQTF practitioner requirements.

JS406 Ethical Leadership for Today's Organisations

The unit analyses aspects of the "new thinking' that is currently challenging the traditional, mechanistic world-view prevalent for much of last century. The cultural life and espoused values of organisations are examined in the light of decision making, communication networks, research and management structures, leadership, professional development and personal worldviews. Models of successful organisational development will be studied from a "value based' stance that promotes the integration of life and work. Leaders of the future will bring a new style of shared leadership where they will give witness to values they espouse in their personal and professional lives. Such leaders create organisations that have a service ethic that will ultimately contribute not only to the nations growing economy but to the quality of life in a democratic society.

JS407 The Universe Story: A New Perspective
This unit challenges students to explore current research findings and scholarly writing in areas related to the "new" cosmology. The aim is to help students develop a framework in which to explore emerging ideas that are currently questioning certain fundamental assumptions of the modern world, in particular the "consumer approach" to life. The unit's content is organised into modules dealing with the initial development of life, the primeval fireball, the universe, chaos and order, interdependence and fragility, ecological issues, the sacred story of life and care for the earth.
