Internships in Arts and Sciences
What do you want to do with your life? At Notre Dame the future begins now. We offer Internships for high performing students in the areas of Arts, Behavioural Science, Communications, Media, Theatre Studies and Politics. Internships provide opportunities for real-life industry experience while you are still studying.
How do internships work?
The Internship is worth one unit (25 credits points) and is normally completed in a student's final year. Through a simple negotiation and accreditation process, Interns have the opportunity to work in partnership with host organisations operating in areas directly related to their study.
A Behavioural Science Internship allows you to gain 240 hours of industry experience with a private, not-for-profit or government agency doing a project or task of relevance to your study in the Bachelor of Behavioural Science. An Arts Internship (for such disciplines as Arts, Communications, English Literature, History, Politics and International Relations, Sociology and Theatre Studies) allows you to gain 80 hours of industry experience with a community organisation, business, festival, theatre, newspaper or television station, government department, trade union, or interest group. Students provide a detailed report on their industry experience, and supervisors have a chance to assess the contribution of interns.
Interns are required to attend Internship Workshops during one semester. Workshops provide regular vocational training sessions regarding such topics as career development, presenting yourself and your CV, negotiating workplace cultures, finding an industry mentor, values and character development in the workplace.
What’s in it for you?
The University is committed to students gaining realistic industry insight through observing and participating in internship activities. The negotiation process will ensure that Interns are assigned to tasks that are meaningful and have measurable outcomes. Though Internships are not designed to guarantee future employment, they are a positive entry into a workplace environment in your chosen field.
What’s in it for your host organisation?
Interns must have at least a credit average academic performance and skills ready to contribute to the workplace environment. As an Intern, you are an ambassador for the University, and we expect you to make a positive contribution.
Internships must be approved by the Dean of Arts & Sciences as well as by the Internship Coordinator.
