Rural Clinical School
The University of Notre Dame Australia School of Medicine, Sydney, with funding from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, has established a Rural Clinical School (RCS) to deliver medical training in a rural setting and to support and develop the rural medical workforce.
The main campus of the RCS is at Lithgow and there are also campuses in Wagga Wagga and Ballarat. Students undertake placements in inpatient and outpatient public health services at all three campuses as well as in private hospitals at Calvary Healthcare Riverina, Wagga Wagga and St John of God Hospital, Ballarat.
Training in rural medicine occurs throughout the Medicine course at the School, and in their fourth year of study, students from the Sydney School of Medicine commence RCS clinical placements, where they experience rural medicine and the opportunities provided by rural practice. Learning in a rural environment allows a close association with senior clinicians and a strong understanding of the broad social context within which medicine is practised. |
