A/Garth Alperstein is Head of Evaluation in the Medical Education Unit at Notre Dame’s Sydney School of Medicine. For the past 18 years he worked in Community Paediatrics for the Sydney South West Area Health Service. He has also worked in rural South Africa, the Asia Pacific region and New York City, where he worked for a number of years with homeless families and homeless youth. His recent interests and roles have been to address the population and public health aspects of child, adolescent and family heath, social determinants of health, the health of disadvantaged children and families and international child health.
He has been among a group of Community Paediatricians who have lead the way in establishing the direction for population child and youth health in New South Wales and Australia. He has been and/or currently still is a member of a number of State and National committees related to child health including the recent NSW Child & Youth Health Priority Task Force. In 2003 he received a Centenary Medal for contribution to child health, and in 2007 the Public Health Impact Award from the NSW branch of PHAA in 2007.
He has conducted a number of epidemiological studies related to child health including lead exposure, iron deficiency, immunisation status and tuberculosis. He has also published on issues such as health of homeless children, access to health services, social capital and planning and evaluating child and youth health services from a population perspective. For many years he has taught medical students and masters of public health and international public health students.
