Dr Sankar Sinha, a general surgeon and a Professor of Wound Care at the School of Medicine in the University of Tasmania (UTAS) recently joined at the School of Medicine, Sydney as Professor and Head of Anatomy. Sankar’s surgical experiences range from tropical surgery in Africa, India, and PNG to transplant surgery at the Hammersmith Hospital in the UK.

A former International Guest Scholar of the American College of Surgeons and  a Commonwealth Fellow, he has received many accolades in Australia including the Order of Australia and Churchill Fellowship for his contributions to wound care and medical education.

In addition, he has received multiple teaching awards including, the UTAS clinical teaching awards in 2004 and 2009, Teaching Merit Certificates  in 2008, the Teaching Excellence Awards in 1993 and 2010, and the Vice Chancellor’s award for “Outstanding contributions to Teaching & Learning” in 2008.  In 2010, he also received the Australian Learning & Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

Sankar’s teaching philosophy centres on engendering in students themselves the capacity to develop tools for sustained scholarship and autonomous learning.  He recently completed a Masters in Education in 2009 and has developed and implemented several innovative, student-driven learning activities with the ultimate aim of preparing compassionate, holistic, critical and highly skilled medical practitioners.
