CO105 Business Communication (Unit run by College of Business)
Communication is fundamental to the practices of commerce and business in three important ways; it indicates the matrices of human relations, facilitates the organisation dissemination and retrieval of information and facilitates the transaction and exchange of value.
This unit has four main components :

  • Information Literacy skills for Business Studies(Library Based)
  • Theories of Communication and Culture
  • Academic reading and writing skills
  • Communication in a Business Context

 

CO115 Health Communication (Unit run by College of Health)
Information literacy is the capacity to know when you need information, what sort you need, where to find it, and how to evaluate it and organise it. This unit is designed to provide the concepts and skills needed to obtain and use information effectively. The emphasis is on the location and use of information in the field of Health but the strategies learned can be used in any subject area. Major information sources covered include the library, databases, and the Internet, and the use of information in assignments, including correct referencing, and avoiding plagiarism is also covered. The second half of the unit focuses on interpersonal communication skills essential for health professionals. The unit will provide knowledge and skills to complete the tasks required for academic writing and interpersonal communication.

CO121 The Language of Film
The course consists of workshops covering the basic grammar of film and television i.e. how to tell stories using moving pictures. Students will research, write, shoot and edit short videos using the latest digital technology.

CO142 Print Media Analysis & Communication (Business Students only in Semester 1)
An introduction to print journalism: This unit covers the gathering of information, simple and effective writing and writing specifically for newspapers and magazines.

CO202/302 Screen Writing (Pre-requisite: CO121)
This unit introduces the student to the fundamental building blocks of screenwriting, with a focus on the art of story creation. From the conception of the seed idea, through the structuring of a storyline, to the development of a treatment, this unit develops the principle that skilful storymaking is the indispensable foundation of a successful script. Students are expected to participate in workshop exercises, analysis of films and stories, and produce a volume of creative writing culminating in the submission of a detailed script treatment.

CO215 Digital Film Production (CO121, CO142)
A series of workshops equipping students to produce broadcast quality digital film. The workshops cover: basic use of the Canon XL1, Final Cut Pro 3, Lighting, Sound and Production Management for documentary films.

ICO226 (to be re-coded as CO226) - Digital Photography and Graphics (Prerequisites: None)
This unit introduces students to techniques of recording and manipulating photographic and graphical images in digital formats.
It recognises the growing importance of digital imaging in screen and paper based publishing. The principles of how images are made, how they are composed and constructed and how they are stored and transmitted are also covered. Students are required to undertake photographic hands-on exercises outside the designated lecture and tutorial allocated timeslots. The assessment of the unit includes inspection of individual workbook and folio, and final examination.

CO230 Design for the Web (Pre-requisitie: Completion of First Year)
This unit will introduce students to the internet domain from three main perspectives: History - how we got here. Design - aesthetics and the design process. Technology - the tools we use in web-media production. These different perspectives will inform a broad overview of the history, development and practice in what we currently refer to as new media. The goal of the unit is to facilitate development of a strong literacy in new media, backed up by the skills required to plan and execute multimedia projects. At the end of this unit, students will be familiar with basic multimedia production methods, and have an understanding of the web technologies underpinning new media.

CO231/331 Media Analysis (Pre-requisite: Completion of 1st year)
The aim of this course is to develop a critical understanding of how media texts engage the viewer/reader and construct their own representations of reality. It enables students to write critically about media texts using simple analytic principles.

CO233/333 Broadcast Journalism (Pre-requisites: CO121 & CO142)
Broadcast Journalism is an up-to-date course in the theory and practice of electronic journalism. It offers 'would be' TV and radio news reporters the opportunity to learn and practice all the essential skills involved in broadcast reporting for local and national networks including: news writing, news gathering, news reading, interviewing and program making.

CO234 Theory and Practice of Journalism (Pre-requisite: Completion of 1st year)
CO234 builds on the theories and practices of journalism introduced in CO142 Print Media Analysis and Communication: Research skills, interviewing, writing for newspapers, magazines and online journalism. It includes a module on media ethics and media law. Journalism has undergone a global reformation since September 11th 2001. CO234 will examine the impact of that event in terms of print and online reportage. It will consider the continued value of the press as the 'Fourth Estate'. Students will be encouraged to contribute to 'Quasimodo', 'The Big Issue', 'The Fremantle Herald' and online publications.

CO251/351 Theories of Communication, Advertising and Persuasion (Pre-requisite: Completion of 1st year)
This unit will examine the communication process between media text and audience at an advanced level. Throughout the unit we will take a critical look at some of the major theoretical issues in communication studies, with a special emphasis on the persuasive power of media texts. The unit will include a detailed study of persuasion in advertising, as well as a broader look at the communication process at work in film, television, print media, and online texts. Our own role in this communication process – as analysts, consumers, or fans – will be foregrounded as part of a constant attempt to bring issues of readership into the analytical equation.

CO260/360 Cinema Studies (CO121)
This is an introductory unit to the study of film aiming to equip students with the basic concepts and techniques of film analysis and appreciation. It discusses: film form, art, culture, technology, language and history. Some definitive examples of style and genre will be viewed.

CO316 Advanced Digital Film (Pre-requisite: CO215)
A series of advanced workshops further equipping students to produce broadcast quality digital film. The workshops cover: advanced use of the Canon XL1, Final Cut Pro 3, Lighting, Sound and Production Management for TV Drama and the authoring of DVD portfolios.

CO321 Interactive Media (Pre-requisite: CO230)
This unit introduces the concept of digital/interactive media from a number of perspectives, ie. underlying theory(ies), the technologies involved, its application in business, and the social/cultural issues. The unit is designed to provide students with an understanding of the variety of digital/interactive technologies and approaches available, particularly so that they can make appropriate decisions from a commercial application perspective.

CO326 Digital Film 1: The Documentary (Pre-requisites: CO215)
Students research, script, plan, produce and edit their own documentary programs using broadcast standard technology. Students are encouraged to create documentary material, which addresses issues of social justice.

CO327 Digital Film 11: The TV Drama (Pre-requisite CO215)
Students research, script, plan, produce and edit their own short TV dramas using broadcast standard technology. Production scripts will be generated in CO202/302 and CO402.

CO330 Documentary Theory (Pre-requisite CO121)
This unit invites students to explore in depth and by example the antecedents, beginnings and the evolution of varieties, techniques & structures of screen documentary world wide, with a particular regard to the relationship of documentary content, form and usage to historical & social context. The screen documentary maker’s theoretical and practical encounter with deeper underlying issues such as responsibility & morality, truth & reality, fact & fiction, access & censorship, the individual & society etc are addressed throughout, with concluding reflection on the place of the documentary today & what it might be in a future of increasing global technological convergence and media conglomerates.

CO370 Radio (Pre-requisite: Completion of 1st year)
Students examine the socio-cultural function of Radio past and present and learn to research, plan and produce radio broadcast material.

CO402 Writing the Short Film (Pre-requisite CO202/302)
This unit consists of 13 x 4 hour workshops. The aim is to assist students to write a 24 - 26 minute drama screenplay through all stages from conception, pitching, synopsis, outline, treatment and dialogue drafts with a strong emphasis in the latter two stages.
