ED3000 Holistic Health: 0-8 years
This unit examines the health, well being, nutrition and safety of children from birth to eight years of age. Implications for children, families and communities are addressed, including practices in a range of early childhood settings.
Early childhood educators need an integrated approach to issues affecting the well-being of children from birth to eight years of age, with emphasis on health, hygiene, nutrition and safety. The unit draws on theory and research to inform practice for adults and young children in a range of early childhood settings.

ED3001 Music, Dance & Drama: 0-8 years
This unit is designed to enable students to explore and reflect on the Arts in their various forms. In particular, students will discover the connection between music, dance and drama and its importance in the early years. Within music, students will be exposed to key concepts such as duration, melody, pitch, rhythm, texture and timbre.  Simple percussion instruments will be used to develop these skills.  The overall goal of the unit is to equip students with the skills required to facilitate a holistic and integrative arts program.  As such, methodology will be heavily emphasised throughout the unit.

ED3211 Teaching and Learning Strategies

This unit brings together understandings of the Curriculum Framework, a developmental approach to teaching and learning as well as students' growing understanding of teaching practice. It also draws on the student teachers' ability to employ the most appropriate strategies, approaches and resources to enable students to reach their learning potential.

ED3215 Contemporary Issues in Secondary Education
Pre-requisites: ED1120 Co-requisites: Nil
This unit is designed to provide students with the opportunity to engage with the most current issues facing teachers in the unique context of the secondary setting. Students will explore the challenges of teaching adolescents of this current generation. What are the major social issues facing them and how do they impact on the classroom? Topics include drug education, mental health, emerging technologies, vocational pathways and expanding career options. Curriculum issues will also explore changing trends in curriculum design and new ways of thinking about assessment in the Secondary Context. Students should feel confident in approaching the Secondary context that they are familiar with and able to engage critically with the important contemporary debates in Secondary education today.

ED3218 Secondary Religious Education 2

The Unit is designed for students to extend their knowledge of teaching Religious Education in Catholic upper secondary schools in WA. Throughout the Unit students explore the context of Religious Education as a Ministry of the Word and as the first key Learning Area in a Catholic school. ED3218/4219 assists students in seeing how the content of the mandated diocesan Religious Education Guidelines can be conveyed to students in the upper secondary school context. This Unit is a requirement for those seeking ‘Accreditation to Teach Religious Education’ as in a Catholic secondary school.

ED3221 Primary Science
Pre-requisites: Nil   Co-requisites: Nil
In this unit students will be explicitly taught relevant science content and be exposed to a wide range of strategies to effectively teach science in the primary school. Students will be introduced to appropriate State and nationally-based curriculum materials to support the teaching of primary science.  This unit also shows how to develop Science and Technology concepts within a hands-on, interactive learning environment.  Imbedded within the unit will be Primary Connections materials, published by the Australian Academy of Science. By the end of the unit students will demonstrate an adequate knowledge of key concepts required for science teaching at a primary school level.  At its core, this unit aims to facilitate the development of confident and competent primary science teachers.

ED3294 School Experience II: Secondary

The unit is a school experience program for one school term. Student-teachers teach a number of lessons in the same class in their major or minor Learning Area. Observation of the teaching of the experienced tutor teacher and working with small groups under the direction of the teacher are other key components of the School Experience. Each student-teacher is assessed for developing competence and a pass grade or higher is required for progression to the Teaching Internship.

ED3300 Behaviour Management & Social Skills
Prerequisite: ED2095 Inclusive Education Co-requisites: Nil
This unit provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the principles of behaviour management and of social skills acquisition appropriate for children with special learning and behavioural needs. It equips students with the strategies necessary to cater for special needs children in both regular and special settings. Although based in comprehensive theory, the unit is practical in nature and of value to those training for regular classroom teaching.

ED3529 Understanding and Guiding Children's Behaviour

In this unit students analyse the relationship between children's development, emotional competence, and behaviour. They identify factors that may trigger behaviours of concern and develop management plans for guiding the behaviour of individual children. The unit focuses on helping young children to manage their emotions by developing competencies such as self-awareness, self-control, empathy, and the skills of listening and resolving conflicts. Throughout the unit, students explore the concept of emotional Intelligence. Also addressed are conditions under which it may be necessary to involve others, for example family and support systems, in the management process.

ED3619 Principles of Primary Religious Education 2

This unit is designed to enable student teachers of pre-primary and primary school students to acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of religious education method. Building on the theological principles underlying the Religious Education Curriculum studied in ED2618, students are helped to develop skills in program planning, lesson preparation, evaluation, assessment and reporting. Presentation of religious education lessons either within a school or tutorial context is an integral part of this unit.

ED3620 Music Education

ED3622 Drama, Dance and Visual Arts

This unit gives students an insight and practical experience in the art forms of dance, drama, music and visual arts (art, craft, and design). Media and technology are integrated within each of the arts forms. Student teachers are given the opportunity to acquire practical skills in all of the arts forms. Study centres on the development of appreciation, knowledge, creating and presenting/performing the arts. Students are led to an understanding of how arts learning can be integrated into the various curriculum areas within the school. Students develop the skills to incorporate the creative and expressive arts into the early childhood and primary school curriculum.

ED3626 Diagnostic Mathematics Clinic
Pre-requisites: ED1624; ED2624; ED3625 Co-requisites: Nil
Under the direction and supervision of the unit coordinator, students will assess primary-aged children experiencing difficulty with Mathematics. Referred students will be assessed on a one-to-one basis using tools related to their identified needs and age range. Post the assessment phase, children will be placed into small learning groups and undertake a six week after-school-hours support program, with a 90 minute contact block each week. At the completion of the six week program, students will generate a report for the referring school and the parents of the child concerned.

ED3628 Learning Area Studies: English 2 – Writing
Pre-requisites: ED1120; ED1625 Co-requisites: Nil
This unit gives students in-depth study of how children learn to write and how writing in kindergarten to year seven is most effectively taught. Students learn how to use the Curriculum Framework and accompanying English documents for planning, as well as how to implement the First Steps writing resources. Students will use a range of tools for assessing reading in the primary years. Using children’s literature as part of an integrated and explicit teaching programme will also be integral to this unit.

ED3629 Catering for Students with Special Needs

The unit aims to provide pre-service teachers with the knowledge and skills required to facilitate the education of children with special needs in all settings.  It will examine the principles and procedures that inform modifications to the classroom environment, curriculum, instruction and assessment of students with special needs.

ED3651 English 3: Writing and Spelling
Pre-requisites: Nil Co-requisites: Nil
This third English unit will focus on the teaching of writing and spelling through literature to develop an understanding of current theories and classroom teaching practices. An holistic approach to the teaching of English is essential thus reading, viewing and oral language will be embedded in the unit, with writing and spelling being explicitly addressed.
The National English Curriculum, syllabus and other key English resources will be used for the effective planning, teaching and assessment of writing and spelling.  A range of assessment tools will be used to document student progress and plan for instructional programs across all year levels. Through making a writing planning document and learning centre resource, students will gain practical knowledge of how to teach the different text forms of writing across the early and middle childhood phases of development. The explicit teaching of writing, spelling, morphology, grammar, punctuation and handwriting will be a focus of this unit. The management of students with learning difficulties and English as a second language within the classroom literacy program will also be addressed. An integral part of the unit will be the integration of literature, information technology, and critical literacy into the teaching program.

ED3662 – Mathematics 3: Measurement and Geometry (New Unit to be cross coded with ED4662)
This is the third in a sequence of four units in Mathematics Education. Ideally, ED2652 should precede this unit but it will be possible, in approved circumstances, for students to complete this unit out of sequence. This unit explores the Measurement and Geometry strand of the Australian Mathematics Curriculum. There is a focus on both the content of this strand and the development of appropriate pedagogical strategies relating to the teaching of Measurement and Geometry from early childhood to late primary. There is an emphasis on how children learn about measurement and spatial geometry and the implications of this for teaching. Planning and its connections to assessment and reporting will be explored in some depth. There is a continued focus on the mathematics skills and knowledge of students, with demonstrated competency required with primary level mathematics topics.
