ED4002 Teaching Internship
In this unit student-teachers further develop their teaching skills. Student-teachers observe, program, sequence, plan and teach a number of lessons both their major and minor teaching areas and Religious Education (if applicable), gradually building to a substantial teaching load by the end of the 10 week block. This unit provides the student with an opportunity to participate in a broad range of co-curricula and extra-curricula activities of the school and to develop an understanding of the dynamics and culture of the day-to-day life of a school. It also facilitates progressive development of skills needed for effective interpersonal involvement in the classroom, school and wider school community. During this practicum students increasingly accept the role of a classroom teacher. They develop added confidence as a teacher as they accept increasing responsibility for planning and implementing their programs and for evaluating their own effectiveness, personal suitability and commitment.
ED4110 Religious Studies in Australian Schools

The Unit is designed for students who are prepared to teach Religious Studies in State or Religious schools other than Catholic. It provides a general introduction to the nature, quality and development of religious experience, and the life and teachings of Jesus as presented in the Gospel of Mark. The Unit involves a study and actual practice in the teaching of Religion in Life, a practical ecumenical Christian set of texts used widely for religious education in both government and non-government schools throughout Australia.
ED4115 Promoting Values Education in School Communities

This unit explores the nature of values and values education. As teachers are required to explicitly promote the core shared values of the Curriculum Framework and the Australian National Values, students will be exposed to materials relevant to assisting them in completing this task. Topics to be covered include the clarification of one's own value system; the exploration of values within a whole school and classroom environment; the pedagogy associated with values education; and the methodology surrounding the evaluation of a values-based curriculum. The role of the teacher in modelling values education is also considered. By the completion of the unit, students will be adequately prepared to implement a values-based curriculum.

This unit examines, in an exploratory way, key ideas about teaching and learning, the role of the teacher, the characteristics of effective teachers and schools. It explores the purpose and nature of schools. It introduces students to the essentials of lesson planning and to oral communication skills associated with teaching. Students are also introduced to the Curriculum Framework , a key document directing and shaping the approach to education taken in all Western Australian schools.
ED4125 Religious Studies in Australian Schools 1

This Unit investigates the phenomenon of religious experience as expressed by people in major religions around the world and within Australian society. This also includes an inquiry into the uniqueness and significance of Aboriginal spirituality to Australian communities today. From this initial study of world religions, the Unit turns its attention to special interest topics affecting the world and Australian society today: the tension between and within different religions, the role of women within the major religions today, the relationship between religion and science and the development of other beliefs systems. It is designed to assist future teachers who intend to teach in religious and/or State schools to understand the religious heritage and practices of many of their students in their classes. Specifically, ED3110/4125 is for students not seeking Accreditation or who wish to acquire ‘Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School’.

It focuses on the necessary elements that contribute to the Catholic character of Catholic school communities. This culture is supported and promoted by the varying roles and responsibilities among administrators, teachers, parents and students within the Catholic education sector. A significant aspect studied in this Unit is the religious dimension of the policies, pastoral care and curriculum of the Catholic school. Also the challenges facing Catholic schools in the future is explored.
ED4130 Advanced Teaching Skills

This unit focuses on four main areas that contribute to the development of advanced teaching skills. Specifically, the course focuses on short and long term planning within classroom and care settings, advanced instructional skills, monitoring student learning and reporting student achievement. In addressing these key areas, the course provides students with opportunities to build on existing knowledge and increase competencies in preparation for School Experience and the Teaching Internship.
ED4132 Working with Indigenous Students

Consideration is given to the distinctive learning styles of Aboriginal peoples and their implications for curriculum design, for the choice of syllabus content and teaching strategies, and for the appropriate social organisation of schools and classrooms. Particular attention is given to the importance in remote areas of assisting Aboriginal children to acquire Standard Australian English. The unit examines the linguistic needs of Aboriginal children and the appropriateness of conventional approaches to the diagnosis and support of children with specific learning needs. Students are exposed to a variety of innovative developments which have taken place in Kimberley Catholic schools.
ED4133 Professional and Legal Responsibilities of the Teacher

The unit is practical in nature, developing both skills and knowledge. It explores the modern concept of teaching as a ‘profession’. The nature of professions and professionalism and the implications of this for teacher’s work and conduct are examined. The legal responsibilities of teaching professionals, such as duty of care and reporting of children at risk of abuse, are considered along with the professional and collegial demands on the teacher in the school context. The Policy Statements of the Catholic Education Commission relevant to teachers’ responsibilities are reviewed.

This unit explores the way in which various technologies can support different theories of teaching and learning. The ways in which these technologies can be integrated into the curriculum and into teaching methodology is examined and modelled.

This unit helps to prepare students for their first teaching appointment. This unit will springboard from the Internship and prepare students for the exigencies of first year teaching. As such, it bridges the gap between university and the workplace. Topics to be covered include work-related aspects such as teacher unions and teacher registration; writing a curriculum vitae; the job application process; employment interviews; ‘relief’ teaching; teaching in country in remote locations; setting up a classroom; planning the first week’s work; establishing and reinforcing classroom rules and standards; pastoral care; diagnostic testing; communicating with parents and parent/teacher meetings; access to professional associations and journals.

Education for values has become a significant aspect of contemporary schooling. In recent times, governments and school systems have discussed how students can acquire values that will allow them to lead decent and successful lives in the 21st century. This Unit will focus on why values are now explicitly identified and promoted within documents such as the Western Australian Curriculum Framework and in the ethos of independent and religious school systems. The Unit will explore how commonly shared values in different school communities are taught and how these values can be assessed. A further focus will be the significant role of the classroom teacher in promoting commonly shared values as a model and facilitator. Values as the ‘hub’ of all learning in a school will also be investigated as well as discussion on practical ways of nurturing values in students at all levels.

This unit explores the framework of teacher interaction with students and its impact on student learning and the perspective's students bring to their learning and the resultant mediation of learning that occurs due to cognitive and affective influences. In the context of an outcome-based approach, the implications of this mediated learning for the teacher's instructional skills and for the development of student's cognitive and metacognitive competencies are also explored. The development of teaching for understanding and meaningful learning for all students is a central theme.

In this unit students will be explicitly taught relevant science content and be exposed to a wide range of strategies to effectively teach science in the primary school. Students will be introduced to appropriate State and nationally-based curriculum materials to support the teaching of primary science. This unit also shows how to develop Science and Technology concepts within a hands-on, interactive learning environment. Imbedded within the unit will be Primary Connections materials, published by the Australian Academy of Science. Observation of the teaching of the experienced tutor teacher and working with small groups under the direction of the teacher are other key components of the School Experience. Each student-teacher is assessed for developing competence and a 'satisfactory' evaluation is required for progression to the School Experience 2.

ED4299 Classroom Immersion (Graduate Courses)
Pre-requisites: ED4236 Co-requisites: EDSMxx and EDSSxx
The unit is a school experience program of two weeks’ duration. Student-teachers will observe the supervising teacher in formal teaching situations; assist the teacher where possible in a variety of classroom management and/or supervisory activities; teach small groups of students and also engage in limited whole class teaching. Grad Dip Educ (Secondary) student-teachers are also required to complete a Reflective Workbook.
ED4321 Introduction to Research and Scholarships: Mathematics
This unit explores the concept of service-learning as a means of developing leadership. Key leadership attributes essential for effective service-learning are examined. These include: the ability to take initiative, solve problems, work as a team, make decisions that have real results for the community, and demonstrate abilities through helping others. The social justice focus for the unit centres on the topics of poverty and ecology, relevant topics for primary education. In conjunction with an intellectual understanding of key issues, students work in pairs to undertake a minimum of 13 hours of community service placement. As a result of participating in this unit students will be able to demonstrate leadership skills through personal reflection, teamwork, discussion and class presentation.

This is a survey course in social justice; it examines the basis of Christian social teaching with particular reference to both Scripture and Catholic/Christian tradition. It will make a case for the centrality of social justice in the life of the church and in what it means to be a Christian. Core aspects of the Christian story will be examined in the light of political and liberation theology. Special emphasis will be given to current global issues.

An holistic approach to the teaching of language and literacy underpins the English units; however it is acknowledged that specific focus needs to be given to the teaching of the different modes of language. As such, the core content of this second English unit focuses on the effective teaching of reading and viewing, through an integrated approach linking theory and practice. Writing and oral language are integral to the development of reading and viewing and will be embedded in the unit. The Curriculum Framework, National English Curriculum and WA syllabus documents are incorporated into planning and documenting a comprehensive reading and viewing instructional program. A range of assessment tools will be introduced and applied in a practical literacy case study. Tutorials will model key instructional strategies essential to effective literacy teaching, and integrate literature as central to the curriculum. This is the first in a sequence of four core units in mathematics education. It introduces the mathematics learning area and establishes theoretical underpinnings for mathematics learning and teaching. It introduces the students to curriculum documentation used by systems and sectors and introduces effective mathematical teaching strategies in the context of the Number strand and Proficiency strands of the Australian Mathematics Curriculum. The unit has a strong emphasis on personal competence in primary level mathematics. Student-teachers observe, program, sequence, plan and teach lessons, gradually building to a substantial teaching load by the end of the 10 week block. This unit provides the student with an opportunity to participate in a broad range of co-curricula and extra-curricula activities of the school and to develop an understanding of the dynamics and culture of the day-to-day life of a school. It also facilitates progressive development of skills needed for effective interpersonal involvement in the classroom, school and wider school community. During this practicum students increasingly accept the role of a classroom teacher by assuming responsibility for planning and implementing their programs and for evaluating their own effectiveness, personal suitability and commitment.

The decision to enter the world of teaching carries with it a commitment to become increasingly self-aware, a lifelong learner and a reflective practitioner. Reflective educators are individuals who carefully examine their own and others' professional practice. They analyse their own teaching and their students' thinking and learning to find out if certain strategies they are using are making a difference in their students' achievement and performance. The unit requires each student to engage in a series of guided reflections. The reflections will not focus on classroom teaching experiences but on the learning gained from fellow students, from teachers and from text sources.

This unit is offered in two modules, Part 1 and Part 2. Children’s spiritual, physical, emotional, social and cognitive development is examined. Students develop a number of different observation techniques that they will apply to their study of young children. Observations are used as the basis for planning in other units in this course. Part 1 of this unit studies the development of children aged 3-8 years. In Part 2 of this unit students study the development of the human person from the neonate to three years.

The unit looks at the history of early childhood and examines current trends, issues and services that impinge on curriculum development. Students develop a curriculum for an early childhood setting. Working from an understanding of children’s and families’ needs, students develop a personal philosophy, long and short term goals and objectives for individuals and groups of children. Students construct programs for children aged 6 weeks to eight years. A multicultural, anti-bias perspective of program planning is emphasised. Programs are planned to reflect the school’s or centre’s philosophy and goals. Plans and time tables are devised to reflect children’s needs, abilities and interests. Students are taught to evaluate their program in light of stated goals. Students are introduced to formulation of early childhood policies and procedures as well as administration of early childhood services. The issue of professionalism and the code of ethics is emphasised.

It focuses particularly on spirituality and concepts of God, the role of imagination and the spiritual capacity for wonder and awe. A project involving a practical study of the spirituality of youth and their religious experience is an essential element of the unit.

Models of successful organisational development will be studied from a ‘value based’ stance that promotes the integration of life and work. Leaders of the future will bring a new style of shared leadership where they will give witness to values they espouse in their personal and professional lives. This unit challenges students to explore current research findings and scholarly writing in areas related to the “new” cosmology. The aim is to help students develop a framework in which to explore emerging ideas that are currently questioning certain fundamental assumptions of the modern world, in particular the “consumer approach” to life. The unit’s content is organised into modules dealing with the initial development of life, the primeval fireball, the universe, chaos and order, interdependence and fragility, ecological issues, the sacred story of life and care for the earth.

This unit introduces students to community service learning. Notions of service and education are examined and critiqued. As well as developing an intellectual understanding of key concepts, students undertake a minimum of 16 hours community service placement. Reflection in situ of their personal experiences, academic reading in the growing area of community service-learning, social analysis and researching particular social issues/situations, are essential elements of the unit.
