RM6101   Applied Research and Evaluations Methods

This unit is the first of four units of required coursework in the professional doctorate.
Students are exposed to the different research methods/designs predominant in applied settings.  These different methods/designs are assessed for their strengths, weaknesses and practical use.  Skills in research design and evaluation methods will be developed.  Students’ ability to appraise a variety of research problems will be developed.

RM6102   Ethics for Professional Practice and Research

This is the second of four units of coursework in the professional doctorate.
The unit extends the students’ understanding of the different moral theories that are used in ethical arguments about research.  It explores the different types of ethical issues that may arise in the research projects, especially those involving qualitative methods: equipoise, harm and risk; the giving and control of research information; confidentiality, privacy and consent; and examination of the distribution of the harms and benefits associated with research across groups in society; and professional/ national codes of conduct and ethics related to particular disciplines.

RM6103   Developing a Research Proposal

This is the third of four units of coursework in the professional doctorate.  Students will acquire the knowledge and skill to develop and present a research proposal.  During the development of their own proposal, students will learn to recognise common problem areas and how best to address these and critique a research proposal, including the project objectives, background literature review, the plan of investigation, dissemination and costing.

RM6104   Scholarly Writing and Publication

This is the last of four units of coursework in the professional doctorate. This unit will attempt to make a contribution in helping novice authors to prepare their research findings in such a way that they are accepted for publication.
