Centre for Faith Ethics and Society

The Centre for Faith Ethics and Society at The University of Notre Dame Australia was established in January 2009. The Centre is located on the University’s Sydney Campus (Broadway), however, its activities and sphere of interest are University wide.

Our Mission

The Centre was established for the purpose of promoting the study of Catholic intellectual tradition and moral tradition, with a particular focus on faith and ethics and their application and integration into the broader life of society.

Our Objectives

The establishment of the Centre is a practical expression of the University’s mission given the Centre’s mandate which is:

  • To promote the teaching of ethics in all schools and disciplines of the University and to integrate ethical deliberation and debate into the teaching of all units and in particular into those focussed on training for the professions.
  • To inform and support the understanding and adoption of the Catholic Church’s recognition of the complementarity of faith and reason through all the University’s endeavours, both internally and within the wider community.
  • To encourage, promote and undertake research into professional and social ethics, including political, legal and medical ethics and into the relation between ethics and faith.
  • To identify opportunities for commentary and to provide advice in the fields of ethics and faith in relation to contemporary social issues.

Underlying all these objectives is the desire to promote interdisciplinary teaching, discussion, scholarship and research within the University and more broadly. In keeping with this intention, the Centre draws on staff from all Campuses and from all disciplines in undertaking its activities.

The Centre’s Activities

The key activities of the Centre include:

  • Supervision of research students
  • Facilitation and mentoring of academic staff in research and scholarship
  • Research and writing of academic publications; in particular the Centre will produce an online journal in the area of social Ethics in association with the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.
  • Facilitation of interdisciplinary seminars and conferences
  • Facilitation of funded projects and partnerships in appropriate areas
  • Promotion of the incorporation of faith and reason within the individual schools and disciplines of the University.
