Work commenced in February 2009 on the $1 million refurbishment of Canavan Hall. The Grafton Street, Broadway building is named after Br Kelvin Canavan, Executive Director of the Catholic Education Office and long time supporter of Notre Dame.

The building, constructed in the 1880s was first built as a brick works and later used as a warehouse and furniture display centre. For the past decade it has been the home of Pioneer Studios, a major film making and photographic studio.

The tender was awarded to Equiset Constructions, the building firm responsible for the renovation of both the Broadway and Darlinghurst campuses. The first stage was to demolish the existing interior walls and ceilings and expose the shell of the building and saw-tooth roof. Following that the floors were repaired, new concrete poured and the new interior layout constructed.

Completed and opened in July 2009, Canavan Hall's facilities include two large lecture theatres seating 150 each, two seminar rooms with 70 seats each, a performing arts space and a recreational/physical education teaching area.
