Professor Kearns is a registered nurse and midwife with 16 years clinical nursing experience including 12 years in intensive care. In 1994, she completed a Science Honours degree and was awarded the University of Sydney Medal for Biochemistry. Following this Prof Kearns completed a PhD in molecular genetics then became a post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Children’s Medical Research Institute. She has taught undergraduate science and nursing students for over 14 years. Her special interests cover the areas of the clinical sciences and human genetics. The years working in intensive care have provided her with a solid nursing and medical knowledge base and she now enjoys combining her experience in nursing, science and academia.
